Strawberry banana smoothie ingredients
To make this healthy strawberry banana smoothie you will need:
If possible you should use organic strawberries for this recipe. Not only will you avoid nasty pesticides, but organic fruit tends to be sweeter, juicier, and richer in nutrients. I normally buy pre-frozen strawberries for convenience, but if you prefer you can freeze your own. Spread whole or halved strawberries on a cookie sheet, and leave in the freezer for at least six hours before blending.
Bananas get sweeter as they ripen, so look for fruit with brown speckles on the skin. Cut your banana into small chunks, place on a cookie sheet, and freeze. You can also buy your banana pre-frozen if you’d prefer.
To avoid overpowering the strawberry and banana flavor of your smoothie, avoid using plant milk which has been sweetened. My favorites for this recipe are oat, almond, and macadamia, because of their light, natural flavor. That being said, any natural plant milk will work, so feel free to swap out for your favorite.
I used afor speed, but any will do. If you don’t have one then a normal blender will work, but may take a little longer to achieve the desired consistency.
Depending on your tastebuds, you might want to add a littleor to your smoothie. If your fruit isn’t completely ripe then this is a good way to bring out their flavor. Alternatively, you can use sweetened plant milk.
And that’s it! Below I will share my tips for getting the most from this classic smoothie, and some of the health benefits of drinking it.
Health benefits of strawberry banana smoothie
Fruit smoothies are a fantastic way to hit your five-a-day, especially for fussy eaters and kids. Strawberry and banana are both dense in nutrients and pack a real health punch when taken together. Just one portion of strawberries (around 8 berries) contains more vitamin c than a whole orange, as well as a hefty serving of manganese and potassium. Bananas are also full of manganese and have one of the highest concentrations of vitamin B6 of any fruit or vegetable. Although low in calories and fat, a strawberry banana smoothie will load you up with energy, thanks to the abundance of natural sugars in fruit.
Can I use unfrozen fruit in my smoothie?
You can certainly use fresh fruit if you prefer, but be aware it will alter the consistency and texture of your smoothie. Frozen fruit is what gives the drink its luxurious thickness, as well as making it nice and cold.
If you don’t have fruit in the freezer and don’t want to wait for your smoothie, then add 2 – 3 ice cubes to the blender once your fruit is pureed. This will help thicken it up.
If you want a runnier consistency then try switching the frozen strawberries for fresh fruit. Leave in the fridge for 20 minutes before serving to ensure it’s nice and chilly. Alternatively, for a thicker smoothie, add an extra 1/4 cup of frozen strawberries, or a couple more ice cubes.
How to make a strawberry banana smoothie
